Butterflies on the Wind

Just needed a spot for the random thoughts that clutter my brain.

How many pills do you need to last a month?

Wow, time flies! It's been over six months since I last posted. A lot has happened in that time, the most significant being the deterioration of my back.

I am currently on leave from my office for my back. I just fell into the pit of despair. My hopes have been pinned on getting the surgery to fix the extruded disc that is pushing on the S1 nerve root. I have been waiting 2 weeks so far with one more to go just to get in and talk about surgery with the neurosurgeon and even longer before I would be able to get the surgery. This is after months of physical therapy, traction, and selective nerve root blocks.

The doctor prescribed Lyrica and Percocet after we tried various other medications. The problem is that the first prescription for Percocet was for 50 tablets which I was allowed to take four times a day. Well, 50 tablets four times a day doesn't go very far. So I called for a refill because I was going to run out of pills over the 4th of July weekend. The person at his office called me back to tell me that I should have plenty left. She just didn't get the basic math of how long 50 pills would last me.

I am a smart person. At least sometimes I am. I had called for that prescription on Wednesday in case there was a problem and the doctor needed to see me. At that point I asked for an appointment to see the doctor.

When I got there to check in, I happened to wave at the doctor. He asked if I had gotten the refill. That was an odd question considering that I had been told that he had denied it. After some discussion, I walked out of the office with a prescription for 30 more tablets of Percocet, enough to last slightly over a week.

This week I did the same as the week before. I called in for the refill on Wednesday. This time the doctor did want to see me before prescribing more. I explained that in taking 4 per day, with a week before I could see the surgeon and even longer before I could get surgery, I was going to need a lot of prescriptions of 30 tablets per day to get me through.

I think something finally clicked in his brain. When I walked out of there, I had a prescription of 120 tablets.
